HISTORY OF THE RUBY
The name ruby comes from ruber,   Latin for red.  It is good to know that rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diamond is a 10.0 Mohs.
Rubies are found all over the world. Let’s look at the largest ruby in the world today. This Burmese ruby you see in the picture (below) called the ‘Sunrise Ruby’ weighs 25.59 carats. It was sold last year at the Sotheby’s auction house in Geneva, Switzerland. The ring was valued at 12 million. But, was sold for $30.3 million at the auction (Tuesday, May 12,2015).

The most prized Rubies were traditionally found  in Burma next to India. Now, they are mined in many regions. Recently, Greenland has discovered ruby deposits.  Each ruby has a different shade of red, depending on the mining region. For example, in Macedonia, rubies are a raspberry colour.  Macedonia is the only country in Europe to have naturally occurring rubies. The ruby is also included on the Macedonian Coat of Arms.

TREATED RUBIES
In the 19th century, some flawed rubies were treated with heat to heal the fractures (cracks) in the gemstone. Heating process eradicates impurities.  Later, filling the fractures inside the ruby with lead glass is used to improve the transparency of the ruby. On the down side, heating a ruby will bring the price down.

The Ruby colours ranges from pink to a brilliant red!

However, a really perfect ruby is as rare as perfect love. If you do come across it, it will cost a small fortune. But when you have found ‘your’ ruby, don’t hesitate: hang on to it!

RUBY BABY

Ruby is a popular name for songs. The Rolling Stones did “Ruby Tuesday”. Here’s anther Ruby. Remember Dion from Belmont Street in the Bronx? “Ruby Baby”! The DRIFTERS sang ”RUBY BABY” in 1956. But, Dion put it on the charts with his up-beat version. Let’s wind the clock back to 1962 and listen to the classic sounds of Dion and the Belmonts.

JCK Las Vegas 2016

HELLO EVERYONE!
I am back from the annual  JCK Las Vegas Jewellery Expo held June 4-6, 2016. I have met some wonderful people from across the country. It was exciting to see all the brand names with their latest  designs for the upcoming season all under one roof! What’s coming back? The ‘chocker’ necklace. The chocker necklaces comes and goes in popularity. Now, its back again. Re-introduced at the JCK Vegas show, you will be seeing more chocker necklaces this coming season.
trends-ck-vegas-show I am able to see the influences in modern jewellery design first hand even before it reaches the public. New ideas and feelings reflected in how jewellery designs will look today. People have different tastes that influence what new designs will be offered. The free flowing, raw, organic designs are gaining a stronger foothold in our society (see pink sapphire/diamond rings below).

TWO MAJOR EVENTS
There are two major events each year for jewellers and jewellery fans alike. The Baselworld is the leading event for the watch and jewellery industry held in Switzerland. It is so large that it is a small village in itself. People come from around the world to see new designs and trends in watches and jewellery. The other popular jewellery symposium is in Las Vegas, California. The JCK Las Vegas Event has been showing off brands and trends attracting thousands of people each year. They are both vibrant shows with so many jewellers getting together.

AND THE WINNER IS..
Every year, the LAS VEGAS show picks a piece of jewellery that stand out in design. This year the award goes to Christopher Designs for this unique extravagant ring. The centre diamond is a criss cross cut.  The light would reflect beautifully. Especially surrounded by many round cut diamonds.

Lapis Lazuli; the unsung gemstone

lapislazuli46The name Lapis comes from the Persian word Lazur’ meaning ‘blue stone’. The best Lapis is said to be from Afghanistan.
Lapis Lazuli can also be found high in the Andes Mountain in Chili. The mountainous region of Afghanistan. Russia, Italy and Egypt have Lapis deposits as you van see in this picture. Lapis is not in great demand.  You will seldom see Lapis  jewellery.  Most people have only seen Lapis Lazuli in a museum and pictures of course.

The Humble LAPIS LAZULI
Perhaps because Lapis is not a pure looking stone like most jades, it is not popular. Turquoise would be in a similar category. A bit of a muddled looking gemstone.  Lapis does not have real sparkle like a sapphire or a diamond. lapis_egg-russiaThe colour is a deep blue. This Russian egg-shaped pendant that you see here was made in the early 1900’s has beautiful gold-colored pyrite (fool’s golds) inclusions. Its value is about $2,000. Not one for the record books. I am fond of this cobalt blue rock.  I have always admired the colour of Lapis Lazuli. It almost sound like an African tribe, “The Lazuli Tribe”. Here is a bit of trivia for you about Lapis. Without this blue rock Van Gogh would not have painted the brilliant blue STARRY NIGHT.  He could have used some other blue. But, we are glad he did not. Lapis lasts forever, as does The Starry Night.lapislazuli-vanj-gogh

An artist who wants an ultramarine pigment had it made from ground lapis lazuli.
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) used ultramarine to paint The Starry Night in 1889. The oil on canvas painting is considered to be one of his best works and is today in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It is a widely recognized painting.

March is the Age of Aquamarine

AQUARIOUS-EARRINGSAquamarine is the traditional birthstone of people born in March. The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. The word ‘March’ comes from the Roman ‘Martius’. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war. March was the beginning of our calendar year.
Aquamarine CRYSTAL
Aquamarine crystals of up to 3 feet are actually not uncommon. The best quality stones are from Brazil, where crystals weighing several kilos have been found. Other places aquamarine is found are the Soviet Union, Madagascar (where a dark blue variety is found), the United States, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria. In Ancient, as well as Modern times, the aquamarine is said to have countless positive effects on the wearer.

Be My Valentine!

St. Valentine
St. Valentine

Who was St. Valentine?
The feast of St. Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496.  Valentine (Valentinus) was imprisoned by disobeying the Roman Emperor Claudius II for marrying soldiers at a time when Claudius had decreed single men made better fighters.  This saintly Presbyterian is celebrated for his bravery, humanity and love. A day of romance was established in the 14th century to be celebrated on February 14th and embraced by all religions across the world today.  Greeting cards known as “valentines” flourished in the 18th century.

Before Valentine’s death (A.D. 270) in prison, it is alleged that he wrote a letter professing his love for the kindness of a blind girl (the jailer’s daughter) and signed it

One of World’s Most Flawless Diamond (pendant)

THE FIRST OF ITS KIND.
The ESPERANZA diamond is the largest, flawless diamond that was found in Arkansas in the United States. This diamond was nicknamed “the icicle” due to its long shape.

The 8.52-carat Esperanza diamond as it is being cut into a rare Triolette shape: Photo credit: Gretchen Friedrich

Originally weighing 8.52-carats, the Esperanza diamond will now go on a three-month tour of U.S. jewellery stores
Ian Douglas, an New Zealand jewellery designer and creative director of the Inspired collection, designed this perfectly flawless 4.6 ct Esperanza diamond. The half a million dollar diamond will go on sale in April, unless is sold earlier.
THE ESPERANZA STORY
After the design and GEM-CAD images were completed, the diamond cutter began to do his magic. It begins when Mike Botha of Embee Diamonds from Canada, spent 130 hours cutting the rough diamond in North Little Rock at a special cutting event at Stanley Jewelers Gemologist in Arkansas. When Ian Douglas of New Zealand was asked to participate, Douglas said he was privileged and honored to be asked to design this rare diamond. The Esperanza diamond cut itself was wielded by Mike Botha. Lots of contributors to this icicle shaped diamond. How fitting to sparkle up our cold winter months in Canada.

After  the last 75 hours at the grinding wheel, master diamond cutter Mike Botha (of Canada) put the finishing touches of polishing the “Esperanza” diamond. The 147-facet triolette diamond can be appreciated by both jewellers and the public. Some say the Esperanza  diamond pendant will sell for $300,000. Others are predicting $500,000. What do you think?

You now have a glimpse of what goes on behind the scene when the designers and cutters create those beautiful pieces with precision and an artful eye…..just for you!!

December 50 Shades Of Blue

Tanzanite And Diamond Ring at Lorne Park Jewellers
Tanzanite and Diamond Ring at Lorne Park Jewellers

Those of you having your birthday celebrations in December are slightly overshadowed by The Christmas holiday celebrations. Company Dinners, Church gatherings and feasts for the family. Perhaps that is why the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) added the tanzanite as an official birthstone for December in 2006. This month we have a ‘NEW” brilliant Tanzanite and diamond ring. We hear the O-O-O-H’S and A-H-H-H’S from our customers every day. It is quite spectacular!
Dec_birthstones-2 FIFTY SHADES OF BLUE Topaz ( India’s December birthstone), Tanzanite and Zircon are brought to you by Lorne Park Jewellers.  Maybe not as many as 50 shades. You will not run out of brilliant blues to put sparkle into your life. That’s what we do here at Lorne Park Jewellers. It is a great pleasure for us to light up your life!
Tanzanite, Zircon, and Turquoise
December celebrates the violet-blue Tanzanite found in Tanzania in around 1960 and was adopted as another one of December’s birthstone.  One of the oldest known gemstones is the robin’s egg blue turquoise (Pierre tourques or Turkish stone). This is popular mainly in South West USA.  The Zircon is primarily mined in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. (note: Too often people sometimes believe that zircon is not a natural stone, confusing it with cubic zirconia)

didyouknow2DID YOU KNOW?
December’s birthstone started as the ruby and the bloodstone. It all changed in 1912. The bloodstone is a green stone with red flecks. The Birthstone brigade rid itself of this unusual ‘bloodstone’  along with the ruby. In fact there are 9 birthstones related to December at one time or another. It’s a bit bizarre to say the least. Rather than confusing people too much, the agreed colour for December is BLUE.
According to a Hindu text from the 19th century, the gem for the last month of the year is Topaz. In 2002, American Gem Trade Association added Tanzanite to December’s birthstone. England did not adopt the Zircon as official birthstone for December.
TURQUOISE
If cold December gave you birth,
The month of snow and ice and mirth,
Place on your hand a turquoise blue;
Success will bless whate’er you do.
Gregorian birthstone poem

Bloodstone: 15th century December birthstone
Bloodstone: 15th century birthstone for December

15TH CENTURY TO THE 21ST CENTURY  We’ve come a long way baby!
Jewellery stores around the country rarely carry turquoise in their shops. Not because they don’t want to. The pubic is not all that interested in turquoise. The designs are associated with cowboy gear. Perhaps it is because of the flat colour and dark veins throughout the stone. It is not a crystal-like stone.  We generally relate gems found in jewellery stores with sparklers like Tanzanite and Topez and Zircon.
A little known fact is that the Zircon is the most popular stone for December.
