December Blues

Breast-Plate with gems
Breast-Plate with gems

Modern birthstones did not exist until 1912, when the jewellers of America developed a standardized list of birthstones for each month. Some say that the idea of birthstones came from the Israeli tribes symbolizing a gem for each of the 12 tribes, The priests wore the gems on a breast-plate. It is thought that birthstones dated back to these origins. As far back as the 12 tribes of Israel written in the bible. With lack of documentation, it still remains a mystery.

December’s birthstones offer three ways to fight the winter blues: tanzanite, zircon and turquoise – all of them, are best known for beautiful shades of blue. The Blue Topaz is sometimes listed as December’s birthstone. It is said to be the most popular birthstone for December babies to celebrate their birth date. As long as it’s a blue gem seems to be the criteria. People often rely on their jeweller to tell the difference between a topaz, an aquamarine or tanzanite; even a blue sapphire. If you really want to know, visit Vanig, the gemologist at Lorne Park Jewellers. He will be happy talk with you about gems.

BABY BLUE TOPAZ

Blue Topaz
Brilliantly Cut Blue Topaz

The blue topaz, like most other gems come in many shades. A blue topaz will range from a pale clear blue to a vibrant blue. Topaz is rated as 8 (mohs ) on the hardness scale . A diamond is 10 mohs. The topaz is a hard, brilliant stone with a fine color range. In fact, the color of a topaz is more important than the size in determining its value. Because there is an abundance of clear, colourless topaz, they are given gamma rays and sometimes heat-treated to be enhanced into a brighter range of blues. This treatment is acceptable by the gemologist society. One of the amazing things about the topaz is that its crystals can grow to enormous sizes. Deposits of topaz can be found all over the world.

TANZANITE has slipped into December as another gem to represent the month. The Tanzanite stone is named after its country of origin Tanzania and is popular for its intense deep violet to blue color. Tanzanite rates a 6.5 – 7 on the hardness scale and has a brilliant luster. It is a relatively soft and brittle stone, nowhere near as hard as a sapphire or a diamond. Given proper care, it can last a long time. The typical color of tanzanite is blue with a violet tinge.

DID YOU KNOW?
The best way to clean your topaz is with warm soapy water. Never clean your topaz in a home ultrasonic cleaner or by using a steamer. A good gemologist will be able to tell you these facts when you are considering to purchase the topaz. It is important to know that the didyouknow2stone should be protected from any rapid temperature change, acids, or heat. Your topaz stone will start to lose its color if it is kept out in the sun or exposed to other kinds of heat. Both blue topaz (8 mohs) and tanzanite  (7 mohs) are durable stones. They may split when knocked or dropped. Jewellers are extra careful when working with softer stones. Their preferences are rubies (9 mohs) sapphires (9 mohs) and Emeralds (7.5–8 mohs) and of course diamonds (10 mohs).

The Imperial Topaz: November

November is another month where we celebrate with twins:- Topaz and Citrine as this month’s birthstones.
Topaz is a gemstone available in a rich rainbow of colors. Prized for several thousand years for its beauty. All yellow gems in antiquity were called topaz. Often confused with the citrine quartz (yellow) and smoky quartz (brown). As you may well know, quartz and topaz are separate and unrelated mineral species. The hardness (mohs) of a topaz is rated as an 8. A diamond is 10 mohs.
IMPERIAL TOPAZ
The most prized color of topaz is called Imperial topaz after the Russian Czars of the 1800s and features a magnificent deep orange colour. The Czars were the only ones allowed to wear the Imperial” pink topaz.

OPAL ~ October’s Birthstone

opals_blogQUEEN OF GEMSTONES
October birthstone OPAL has been used as a gemstone since Antiquity. Even though tourmaline is a more recent discovery. Tourmaline is  dubbed as the “Rainbow Gem” due to the wide variety of colors. When warmed, tourmaline creates static electricity. On the mohs scale, tourmaline has a hardness of  7-7.5, same as aquamarine and quartz. Diamonds are rated as 10 .

OPULENT OPAL
Opal comes from the Sanskrit word “Upala”. The Romans are known to have commonly used the words “opalus” to describe the semi-precious stone.  Opals is part of the mineraloid category. It is a shapeless form of silica. This is due to its water content that ranges between 3% to 21%.

If you actually want to stand out and bring a little bit of the grandeur of the Ancients, such as Queen Cleopatra, then opt for a Tourmaline or Opal necklace, as the one shown above.
Stand out and bring a little bit of the grandeur of the Ancients such as Queen Cleopatra: Green Tourmaline and Opal necklace ( as the one shown above).

The most abundant OPALS are mined in Australia. The Aussies have the best black opals along with red diamonds. Opals are deep underground and hard to mine. Once found, there is a rich abundant supply of Opals in many colours. Opals are 5.5-6.5 on the hardness scale. They are not precious gems but classified as a mineral. Their beauty is so magnificent that 10th month on the calendar year is celebrated by the OPAL!

August Birthstone ~ Peridot

photo provided by ibtimes.com
Cleopatra Wore Peridots

The Peridot is one of the oldest gems dating back to 1500 BC. The Egyptians called it “faridat,” the gem of the sun. The French named this gem is “peritot” – which means gold – perhaps because the stone can vary its shade toward the colour gold in the sunlight. In ancient Egypt, some historians believe that the famous emeralds of Cleopatra were actually Peridot gems. (Cleopatra photo provided by littleartstudio.com) Peridot is very similar to an Emerald, but the stone is less intensive and softer. In the 19th Century, the mines on Zabargad Island (35 miles off the Egyptian coast) produced millions of dollars worth of Peridot. Mining Peridot has diminished over the years. It is believed that the Peridot you see on the market today is most likely  ‘old’ Peridot not ‘new’ Peridot.
If you are nearing your 16th anniversary, celebrate it with the official Peridot.
DIFFERENT SHADES OF GREEN

Dark Green Shade of Peridot
Dark Green Shade of Peridot

The intensity of color depends on the amount of iron present in a Peridot. The more iron, the deeper the colour. The dark green Peridot also have a higher price tag.

Lighter Shade Of GREEN
Popular pale green is common for this gem. They are now mined in places like Mexico, Arizona and the middle east. The finest quality Peridot is found in Pakistan.

“Ruby Baby” July’s Birthstone

RUBIES are considered the King of Gems!

Burmese ruby (27.67-ct) and diamond ring from Bulgari (Hong kong auction at Sotheby’s)

HISTORY OF THE RUBY
The name ruby comes from ruber,   Latin for red.  It is good to know that rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Diamond is a 10.0 Mohs.
Rubies are found all over the world. Let’s look at the largest ruby in the world today. This Burmese ruby you see in the picture (below) called the ‘Sunrise Ruby’ weighs 25.59 carats. It was sold last year at the Sotheby’s auction house in Geneva, Switzerland. The ring was valued at 12 million. But, was sold for $30.3 million at the auction (Tuesday, May 12,2015).

The most prized Rubies were traditionally found  in Burma next to India. Now, they are mined in many regions. Recently, Greenland has discovered ruby deposits.  Each ruby has a different shade of red, depending on the mining region. For example, in Macedonia, rubies are a raspberry colour.  Macedonia is the only country in Europe to have naturally occurring rubies. The ruby is also included on the Macedonian Coat of Arms.

TREATED RUBIES
In the 19th century, some flawed rubies were treated with heat to heal the fractures (cracks) in the gemstone. Heating process eradicates impurities.  Later, filling the fractures inside the ruby with lead glass is used to improve the transparency of the ruby. On the down side, heating a ruby will bring the price down.

The Ruby colours ranges from pink to a brilliant red!

However, a really perfect ruby is as rare as perfect love. If you do come across it, it will cost a small fortune. But when you have found ‘your’ ruby, don’t hesitate: hang on to it!

RUBY BABY

Ruby is a popular name for songs. The Rolling Stones did “Ruby Tuesday”. Here’s anther Ruby. Remember Dion from Belmont Street in the Bronx? “Ruby Baby”! The DRIFTERS sang ”RUBY BABY” in 1956. But, Dion put it on the charts with his up-beat version. Let’s wind the clock back to 1962 and listen to the classic sounds of Dion and the Belmonts.

JCK Las Vegas 2016

HELLO EVERYONE!
I am back from the annual  JCK Las Vegas Jewellery Expo held June 4-6, 2016. I have met some wonderful people from across the country. It was exciting to see all the brand names with their latest  designs for the upcoming season all under one roof! What’s coming back? The ‘chocker’ necklace. The chocker necklaces comes and goes in popularity. Now, its back again. Re-introduced at the JCK Vegas show, you will be seeing more chocker necklaces this coming season.
trends-ck-vegas-show I am able to see the influences in modern jewellery design first hand even before it reaches the public. New ideas and feelings reflected in how jewellery designs will look today. People have different tastes that influence what new designs will be offered. The free flowing, raw, organic designs are gaining a stronger foothold in our society (see pink sapphire/diamond rings below).

TWO MAJOR EVENTS
There are two major events each year for jewellers and jewellery fans alike. The Baselworld is the leading event for the watch and jewellery industry held in Switzerland. It is so large that it is a small village in itself. People come from around the world to see new designs and trends in watches and jewellery. The other popular jewellery symposium is in Las Vegas, California. The JCK Las Vegas Event has been showing off brands and trends attracting thousands of people each year. They are both vibrant shows with so many jewellers getting together.

AND THE WINNER IS..
Every year, the LAS VEGAS show picks a piece of jewellery that stand out in design. This year the award goes to Christopher Designs for this unique extravagant ring. The centre diamond is a criss cross cut.  The light would reflect beautifully. Especially surrounded by many round cut diamonds.

Lapis Lazuli; the unsung gemstone

lapislazuli46The name Lapis comes from the Persian word Lazur’ meaning ‘blue stone’. The best Lapis is said to be from Afghanistan.
Lapis Lazuli can also be found high in the Andes Mountain in Chili. The mountainous region of Afghanistan. Russia, Italy and Egypt have Lapis deposits as you van see in this picture. Lapis is not in great demand.  You will seldom see Lapis  jewellery.  Most people have only seen Lapis Lazuli in a museum and pictures of course.

The Humble LAPIS LAZULI
Perhaps because Lapis is not a pure looking stone like most jades, it is not popular. Turquoise would be in a similar category. A bit of a muddled looking gemstone.  Lapis does not have real sparkle like a sapphire or a diamond. lapis_egg-russiaThe colour is a deep blue. This Russian egg-shaped pendant that you see here was made in the early 1900’s has beautiful gold-colored pyrite (fool’s golds) inclusions. Its value is about $2,000. Not one for the record books. I am fond of this cobalt blue rock.  I have always admired the colour of Lapis Lazuli. It almost sound like an African tribe, “The Lazuli Tribe”. Here is a bit of trivia for you about Lapis. Without this blue rock Van Gogh would not have painted the brilliant blue STARRY NIGHT.  He could have used some other blue. But, we are glad he did not. Lapis lasts forever, as does The Starry Night.lapislazuli-vanj-gogh

An artist who wants an ultramarine pigment had it made from ground lapis lazuli.
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) used ultramarine to paint The Starry Night in 1889. The oil on canvas painting is considered to be one of his best works and is today in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It is a widely recognized painting.
